Chairperson of the CPN-UML and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that those who are “setting the country on fire” must be identified and defeated in the upcoming elections to protect democracy.
Speaking at a program organized by the party in Kathmandu on Friday, Oli said democracy can only survive if anti-democratic forces are defeated through elections. He stressed the need to move forward in cooperation with patriotic and democratic forces to safeguard democracy, adding that such forces should not be treated as electoral rivals.
Oli claimed that certain elements that do not believe in the constitution, politics, political parties, or political leadership are spreading fear and chaos in the country. He warned that these forces are attempting to push the nation toward an anarchic and terror-driven state.
“I want to say clearly on behalf of the CPN-UML, our competition is not with patriotic and democratic forces. If democracy survives, then competition makes sense; if democracy itself does not survive, what is there to compete for?” Oli said. “The ones we must identify and defeat are those who set the country on fire, anti-constitutional, anti-democratic elements who dissolve parliament and push the country toward disorder and an undemocratic situation.”
He added that such forces are trying to create instability and reject democracy, the constitution, political parties, and political leaders, aiming to turn the country into a lawless and chaotic state.
