The Nepali Congress faction led by Gagan Thapa, elected through a special general convention, staged a sit-in protest at the Election Commission on Friday, demanding official recognition. Leaders from the Thapa-led group gathered in front of the Commission office and sat in protest.
Earlier on Friday morning, acting party president Purna Bahadur Khadka and other leaders had submitted an application to the Commission claiming official status. In response, the Commission said it would make a decision based on the Constitution, the Political Parties Act, the Nepali Congress statute, and past precedents.

The Gagan Thapa faction is now pressuring the Commission through the sit-in to declare it as the official party. The group had submitted an application on Thursday to update the central working committee.
