Kathmandu Metropolitan City Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol has stressed the need to prioritize indigenous technology in the construction of buildings and other structures. She made the remarks while addressing a program organized in Kathmandu on the occasion of National Earthquake Safety Day on Friday.
Dangol said that proper implementation of building codes can significantly reduce risks from earthquakes and other disasters. She emphasized that enforcing building codes is not only the government’s responsibility but also the duty of every citizen. She added that engineering aspects should never be ignored in construction, while traditional skills and indigenous techniques must be continued.
“Information technology is being used for earthquake early warning systems and rescue measures. However, the most important aspect is the building code. Implementing it is not only the government’s job; citizens must also take responsibility and follow it for their own safety. Structures should fully comply with engineering standards while also continuing indigenous skills. Buildings constructed using indigenous techniques have proven to withstand earthquakes,” she said.
Deputy Mayor Dangol also stressed the need to move beyond slogans and demonstrate commitment through concrete infrastructure work. She said that instead of limiting efforts to slogans each year, authorities should implement them through action plans and annual programs.
