Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal said being prepared is key to reducing the impact of earthquakes. He spoke at the 28th Earthquake Memorial Assembly on Friday at Bhugol Park, Kathmandu, and highlighted the importance of coordination between different levels of government for better disaster management.

He stressed that local governments’ disaster preparedness efforts should become regular practice. “Sharing knowledge and practicing together can improve our capacity,” he said. “We must keep raising awareness among citizens and follow basic guidelines to make our cities resilient.”

Sunita Dangol, Chairperson of the Assembly and Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu, said communities play a vital role in disaster response, rescue operations, and recovery. “Communities are the first responders during disasters,” she said.

Prem Thapa, Coordinator of Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s Disaster Management Committee, said traditional construction skills could help build earthquake-resistant structures. “Our ancient buildings have survived major earthquakes,” he said. “We should protect and use these skills.”

The program was attended by officials from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, municipal leaders, department heads, and representatives of NGOs and social organizations working in disaster management.

Earthquake Safety Day is observed every year on January 16 to promote safe settlement planning based on lessons from past earthquakes.
