At the 5th Energy Ministers’ Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), held in Ningbo, China, Nepal underscored its commitment to regional energy collaboration and clean energy development.
Representing Nepal, Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Deepak Khadka, emphasized the need for stronger ties among SCO nations, calling for joint efforts in energy trade, infrastructure, and innovation. He stated that the vast resources and populations of SCO countries offer great potential for energy cooperation and economic growth.
Minister Khadka shared Nepal’s ambitious energy plan, which includes producing 28,500 megawatts of electricity by 2035 and exporting 15,000 megawatts. Currently, the country generates over 3,500 megawatts, with projects underway to expand capacity.
Highlighting Nepal’s increasing role in the regional power market, he noted that Nepal has already begun exporting electricity to India and has recently started supplying power to Bangladesh, using India’s grid—a key step in trilateral energy cooperation.
As a dialogue partner of the SCO, Nepal is committed to promoting sustainable, environment-friendly energy development through mutual cooperation and innovation, Khadka said. He also highlighted the importance of regional unity for ensuring energy security and long-term development.
Minister Khadka had departed for China on June 24 to take part in the conference, which was held under the theme “Integrated Innovation for Energy Future.”
