The Government of Nepal has started a nationwide dengue awareness campaign for the month of Shrawan, aiming to inform people about how to stay safe from mosquito bites and control the spread of the disease. With the number of dengue cases rising every year, this campaign focuses on increasing public awareness at the community level.
Speaking at the campaign launch event, Health and Population Minister Pradeep Paudel said that nearly 50,000 people are infected with dengue annually in Nepal. He emphasized that since dengue cases usually rise between Shrawan and Kartik (mid-July to mid-November), it’s crucial for everyone to be alert and take preventive measures during this period.
To support the fight against dengue, the Ministry of Health has allocated Rs 20 Lakh 84 Thousand for prevention and control programs in the fiscal year 2081/82. Health Secretary Dilli ram Sharma shared this information during the event.
Dengue was first reported in Chitwan in 2004, and today, the infection has already been confirmed in 75 districts across the country. The government has set an ambitious goal of bringing dengue cases down to zero by 2030. However, with new infections now appearing even in hilly and mountainous regions like Kathmandu Valley, which previously saw fewer cases, controlling the spread of dengue is becoming more challenging.
