At the 17th Municipal Assembly of Kathmandu Metropolitan City on Wednesday, member Santosh Dhungel criticized Mayor Balen Shah for delays in projects and inconsistent policies.

Dhungel questioned why the promised statue of Kathmandu’s first mayor P.L. Singh near Rashtriya Sabha Griha hasn’t been built. He also slammed the city’s ban on mud and stone houses, calling it a double standard, since KMC’s own Maitri Bhawan and cultural sites use those materials.

On education, he said students are taught about foreign landmarks like the Eiffel Tower but not enough about Nepal’s own heritage, such as Bhanu Bhakta. He called for curriculum reforms.

Dhungel further raised concerns over the removal of rental shutters from public schools, saying it hurt school funding for free education. He demanded either financial support or permission to resume rentals. His remarks reflect growing frustration over the gap between Mayor Balen’s promises and actions.
