Kathmandu – As Nepal prepares to swear in its first female Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, the country is also pausing to honour the sacrifices made during the recent Gen-Z protests.
The youth-led movement, which swept across Nepal demanding accountability and an end to corruption, came at a high cost. According to reports, at least 51 people lost their lives during the protest across Nepal.
Despite the tragedy, the protests have been described as a turning point in Nepal’s democratic journey. It was this wave of public pressure that led to political consensus and paved the way for the appointment of Karki, widely seen as a figure of integrity and independence.
Citizens and civic groups across the country have expressed gratitude to the young generation for their courage. Statements on social media and at public gatherings have called the movement a “revolution of hope” and pledged to carry forward the demands for justice, accountability, and reform.
At the same time, families of those killed have urged the government to ensure that their sacrifices are not forgotten. Human rights organizations are calling for impartial investigations into the deaths and for support to be provided to the victims’ families.
As Nepal enters this new political chapter, the nation faces a dual responsibility: to celebrate the democratic breakthrough achieved through the Gen-Z movement, and to remember the lives lost in the struggle that made it possible.
