Nepal is celebrating the 61st National Children’s Day today under the theme “Investment in Children: Beginning of a Secured Future.”

Observed annually on September 14 (Bhadra 29), the day commemorates Nepal’s ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1990. Since 2006, it has been formally marked as National Children’s Day with different themes each year.

The Constitution of Nepal guarantees children’s rights to education, healthcare, protection, recreation, and overall development as fundamental rights. However, in practice, many children are still deprived of these rights.

Before this, Children’s Day was observed on Bhadra 4, the birthday of Ratna Shah, through cultural programs and distribution of sweets. It was later shifted to Bhadra 29 to highlight children’s rights.

On this occasion, President Ram Chandra Paudel extended his best wishes, stressing the importance of investing in children’s education, health, and development. He also called on all stakeholders to work together to end violence, abuse, and inhumane treatment against children.
