The US space agency NASA has formally banned Chinese citizens from participating in its space programs, even if they hold valid American visas, according to a BBC report.

With this decision, Chinese students and scientists who had contracts with NASA or were assisting in research lost all access to NASA’s programs, systems, and facilities starting September 5. The new decision simply makes this restriction official.

China, in recent years, has been rapidly advancing its space ambitions, including plans to send astronauts to the Moon. This has intensified the space rivalry between the US and China.

The competition is not just about reaching the Moon, but also about gaining access to its valuable resources and minerals, such as titanium, iron, and helium-3. These rare materials are crucial for advanced technologies, superconductors, and medical equipment, making them strategically important.

Chinese astronauts have already been barred from joining the International Space Station. In addition, US security agencies have in recent years raised concerns over alleged espionage risks, leading to more restrictions on Chinese nationals.
