Rastriya Swatantra Party chief Rabi Lamichhane, who walked out of Nakkhu Jail during the Gen-Z protests, has announced that he will return to custody.

Lamichhane had been in jail over a cooperative fraud case when protesters surrounded the prison earlier this week. Amid the chaos, he stepped out briefly, while nearly 15,000 inmates escaped from 26 prisons and reform homes across the country. Several facilities were also vandalized.

Facing public criticism and pressure from the Nakkhu Jail administration, Lamichhane said he would go back. Coincidentally, his return falls on his birthday. “Today is my birthday. I am sending myself back to jail as a birthday gift,” he said in a Facebook video.

Lamichhane expressed confidence that with interim Prime Minister and former Chief Justice Sushila Karki now leading the country, he would not face further injustice. “Now that the personification of justice herself is leading, I have hope,” he added.

Earlier, he had claimed that his release was based on a secretary-level decision. However, the jail administration clarified that he had not completed the required paperwork due to the chaotic situation.
