Rabi Lamichhane, Chairperson of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), publicly apologized on behalf of the government for historical injustices committed against the Dalit community.

Speaking at the House of Representatives meeting on Thursday, Lamichhane referred to the recent election of his friend Khagendra Sunar as a parliamentarian and touched on controversies that arose during the election campaign.

He said, “My friend Khagendra Sunar has been elected and come here. During the election race, some controversies arose regarding him. I don’t know whether he made a mistake or not, but he apologized. Even amid uncertainty about whether he was at fault, he quickly apologized.”

Lamichhane used this as an example to address the entire nation, stating, “We apologize for the injustices committed for ages against people like Khagendra Sunar.”

He claimed that this marks the first time in Parliament that a collective apology has been made for historical discrimination. He emphasized, “This was not just a social mistake, it was an organized crime.”

According to him, centuries of treating skilled communities as untouchables had hindered the country’s development. He stressed that no one should now have to bow or feel inferior because of their caste and once again offered an apology on behalf of the government.

He stated, “Do you know why this country did not progress? Because those who had skills were treated as untouchables. Now, no Nepali should have to bow to anyone because of caste. On behalf of my party, the honorable Prime Minister, and the government, I apologize.”

Lamichhane also noted that the real value of this apology will be determined by justice.
