KATHMANDU — Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has received international congratulations following her appointment as Nepal’s first female Prime Minister. China, the United States, and India have all welcomed her leadership and expressed readiness to work with the interim government.

In a statement on Sunday, China’s Foreign Ministry praised Karki’s appointment and reaffirmed its commitment to advancing bilateral relations with Nepal under the principles of peaceful coexistence.

The US Embassy in Kathmandu commended President Ramchandra Paudel and youth leaders for pursuing a democratic solution, while recognizing the Nepali Army and Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel for ensuring a smooth and peaceful transition. Washington emphasized its readiness to cooperate with the interim government as preparations for general elections progress.

Karki, sworn in on Friday following violent protests that left 51 dead, will lead the interim government until general elections scheduled for March 5, 2026. Her historic appointment is seen as a significant step for gender equality and political leadership in Nepal.
