After months of delays, nearly Rs 4 billion owed to dairy farmers has finally been paid.
The Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) has paid around Rs 1 billion, and private dairy companies have paid nearly Rs 3 billion. This has provided much needed relief to farmers who were protesting over unpaid dues. Both the government and private dairies were able to make these payments by selling milk powder and butter that had been stored in their warehouses.
The DDC says about Rs 450 million, which equals three months of unpaid dues, is still pending. Private dairies, however, have cleared most of their payments.
The Ministry of Agriculture also reported that milk production in the country has been increasing in recent months.
