The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has transferred the body of Nepali student Bipin Joshi to the Israeli army, days after his death was confirmed. The body is currently kept at a military hospital in Israel for DNA verification and other formal procedures.
According to the Nepali Embassy in Israel, the repatriation process will begin only after the DNA test confirms his identity. “The verification is expected to take around four hours, after which arrangements will be made to send the body to Nepal,” said Ambassador Dhan Prasad Pandit.
He further stated that the Israeli government will handle the process of sealing and dispatching the coffin, which could take a few more days.
Joshi, a student from Kanchanpur, was taken hostage during the Hamas attack on a kibbutz area on October 7, 2023, which also claimed the lives of 10 Nepali students. His whereabouts had remained unknown since then.
Following the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Israeli authorities officially confirmed Joshi’s death on Tuesday morning, after which Hamas handed over his body during the ongoing exchange process.
