The GenZ Movement Alliance, comprising various youth groups and activists from across Nepal, has demanded the resignation of Chief Commissioner Prem Kumar Rai and other members of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA). The group formally submitted a written resignation demand letter to the CIAA headquarters in Tangal today.
According to Rijan Rana, one of the leading members of the movement, the team personally visited the CIAA office to register the letter after previously sending an email to Rai on Monday, urging him to step down voluntarily. “We officially submitted the letter in person today. If the commissioners refuse to resign, we are preparing further protest programs. Discussions are ongoing,” Rana stated.
In a statement issued earlier, the Alliance alleged that the appointment of Rai and other commissioners lacked fairness and democratic procedure, claiming the process bypassed parliamentary hearings under the government of Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, undermining the CIAA’s independence and credibility.
The group also referenced a recent Special Court decision that mentioned Rai’s potential conflict of interest and selective prosecution, raising questions about his impartiality.
Highlighting Rai’s alleged links to several major corruption cases, including the Nepal Oil Corporation land purchase, the fake Bhutanese refugee scam, and the wide-body aircraft procurement case, the Alliance said he should resign on moral grounds to restore the CIAA’s public trust.
Since the Federal Parliament is currently inactive, the group argued that impeachment proceedings are not possible and therefore urged Rai and other commissioners to resign voluntarily to uphold the dignity of the anti-graft body.
The GenZ Movement Alliance currently includes 12 youth organizations representing 39 districts across Nepal.
