The commission investigating the Gen-Z protests has moved into the phase of seeking statements from top political leaders, but former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak are unlikely to appear voluntarily. As a result, the commission is preparing to request the government to bring them in through legal measures.
Most of the 150-plus witnesses and officials have already given their statements, but several key figures from the time of the incident, including the then Prime Minister, Home Minister, Home Secretary, Army Chief, and Valley Police Chief are yet to be questioned. With the commission’s term expiring on January 20, officials say the delay has created pressure to conclude the remaining process quickly.
The commission has already questioned senior security, administrative, and parliamentary officials and may summon some of them again. It has also asked the Army Headquarters for clarification regarding its role during the protests.
The panel plans to finish the remaining statements within this week and begin drafting its final report.
