Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has said that the party’s ongoing Special Convention is meant to end factional politics that have long affected the party.
Speaking at the convention, Thapa said the gathering does not belong to any group or leader. He called on party leaders and cadres from all parts of the country to take part without fear or hesitation. He said that in the past, even to become a ward-level or parliamentary candidate, one had to belong to a particular leader’s group, and stressed that this culture must end.
Thapa said many party workers have contacted him but are still afraid of their district-level leaders. He said this fear shows how unhealthy factionalism has become inside the Nepali Congress, and added that the Special Convention is a movement to break these walls of fear and division.
He also said that several parts of Nepal’s Constitution need to be amended. According to him, such changes are possible only through national consensus, and the Nepali Congress should take the lead in this process. However, he said that the basic principles of the Constitution are important to the party and must be protected, with reforms carried out carefully and through agreement among all sides.
