Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli held a discussion today with the officials of the Land Problem Resolution Commission regarding the progress made so far.
During the meeting at the Prime Minister's residence in Baluwatar, the commission informed that they are working in coordination with all three levels of government to identify landless Dalits, squatters, and unmanaged settlers. They shared their plans which include collecting data, verification, land surveying, resolving disputes, registering land, and distributing land ownership certificates.
In the discussion, which also included Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives, and Poverty Alleviation Balram Adhikari, the Commission’s Chairperson Hari Prasad Rijal explained the criteria for identifying landless people. According to him, people who have been living somewhere for at least 10 years without owning land, and who don’t have access to other government land, will be identified as landless or squatters. Similarly, unmanaged settlers must have been living on public or government land for at least 10 years to qualify.
The officials said that the bill to amend some land-related laws has already been passed, which will make their work easier. Prime Minister Oli expressed confidence that the bill under discussion in Parliament will be passed soon and directed the Commission to speed up the process of identifying the landless and squatters in a systematic way.
The government had formed the commission on Kartik 14 (early November).
