U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of the National Guard to stop protests happening in Los Angeles.

According to the BBC, around 2,000 National Guard troops were sent after protests began during immigration raids targeting undocumented immigrants. President Trump’s border advisor, Tom Homan, told Fox News that they are working to keep Los Angeles safe.

On Saturday, a clash occurred in the Paramount area of Los Angeles between members of the Latino community and officers from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Police used tear gas and batons to break up the crowd.

So far this week, ICE has arrested 118 people in these operations. California Governor Gavin Newsom has called the actions cruel.

Reports say that Governor Newsom spoke on the phone with President Trump for about 40 minutes on Saturday, but the details of their conversation have not been made public.
