Authorities have announced that a section of the BP Highway will be closed to vehicular traffic every night for one month, starting Wednesday, July 17, due to increased risks of landslides and floods during the monsoon season.
The Kavrepalanchok District Administration Office made the decision following a safety committee meeting in Dhulikhel. The travel restriction will be in place daily from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. along the stretch from Kavrebhanjyang to Nepalthok, near the Sindhuli border.
Chief District Officer Umesh Dhakal stated that vehicles heading from Kathmandu will be stopped at Kavrebhanjyang, while those coming toward Kathmandu will be halted at Nepalthok. The temporary ban aims to prevent accidents caused by possible monsoon-related disasters.
The BP Highway is a major route linking eastern Nepal to Kathmandu, with hundreds of vehicles traveling it daily. Out of the highway's total length of 160 kilometers, 84 kilometers were damaged during last year’s monsoon.
According to the Division Road Office in Bhaktapur, the damaged parts include:
34 kilometers from Khurkot to Nepalthok in Sindhuli (Section 3), and
50 kilometers from Nepalthok to Dhulikhel in Kavrepalanchok (Section 4).
The office has begun the process of awarding contracts for permanent reconstruction of the affected sections in four phases.
