As tensions rise in the Middle East due to the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, Nepal has turned to India for help in rescuing its citizens from Iran. So far, 16 Nepalis are reported to be in the country, including five who are currently in prison for immigration-related issues.
Responding to a formal request from Nepal, the Indian government has agreed to assist with the evacuation of Nepali nationals. The Indian Embassy in Tehran announced that it will help evacuate citizens from neighboring countries, including Nepal and Sri Lanka. The embassy also shared emergency contact numbers for those seeking assistance.
Nepal’s Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana made the official request and instructed Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Dr. Shankar Sharma, to coordinate the rescue effort. Following India’s confirmation, Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a public notice urging Nepalis in Iran to get in touch with the Indian Embassy.
Spokesperson Lok Bahadur Paudyal Kshetri confirmed that Nepal is in direct communication with Indian officials in Tehran, including Deputy Chief of Mission Rakhee Mayuri. Nepal is also working to secure the release and repatriation of the jailed Nepalis.
India’s swift support has brought much-needed hope for those stranded in Iran, as efforts move forward to ensure their safe return home.
