Madhav Sapkota, a lawmaker from the main opposition party CPN (Maoist Centre), has spoken out against forcing the parliament to run without proper discussion and agreement. During the budget debate on Saturday, Sapkota urged the government to listen carefully to the concerns and demands of opposition parties and their members.
He emphasized that running the parliament in a forceful and authoritarian manner is not right. “This way of pushing the parliament to work doesn’t suit our democracy. It’s hurting the dignity and respect of the parliament, which should be a place for healthy debate and respect,” he said.
The ongoing tensions in parliament have roots in the visa controversy involving Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has been demanding his resignation and wants a high-level investigation to look into the matter. This has led to protests and disruptions inside the parliament.
Earlier, the Maoist Centre also had stopped the parliament from functioning but later agreed to reopen it after reaching a simple agreement with the ruling party. However, the RSP and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) continue their protests, showing that disagreements remain deep.
Sapkota’s words remind everyone that democracy works best when all voices are heard and respected, not when decisions are forced.
