A wildfire in northern Japan has damaged more than 80 buildings and forced around 600 people to evacuate to safer areas.
The fire started in a heavily wooded area of Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, and quickly spread to nearby homes. The Japanese Self-Defense Forces have been trying to control the fire from the air, but it remains out of control.
City officials estimate that at least 84 buildings have been damaged. Mayor of Ofunato, Kiyoshi Fuchigami described the fire as very large, burning about 600 hectares (91,500 acres) of land. Strong winds have made the situation worse, helping the fire spread faster.
The exact cause of the wildfire is still unknown. However, Japan has experienced many wildfires in recent years. A 45-year-old woman who was evacuated said she saw flames approaching her home as she returned from work. Authorities are continuing efforts to contain the fire and ensure the safety of residents.
