Poudel Urges Authorities to Properly Inform Squatter Settlements and Allow Adequate Time

Nepali Congress General Secretary Pradeep Poudel has commented that squatter settlements should have been cleared only after providing adequate information and sufficient time, rather than acting hastily.

 

He stated that deploying bulldozers without sufficient notice and time lacks humanity and practicality. General Secretary Poudel also claimed that the propaganda suggesting there were no genuine squatters in the settlement—only "hukum basi" (influential illegal occupants)—is wrong. He emphasized that the actual squatters should be identified and an alternative rehabilitation plan prepared before any removal.

 

Speaking at a program organized in Kathmandu to congratulate and extend best wishes to Sandeep Rana, the Nepali Congress member elected from constituency no. 1 in Palpa, Poudel reminded that the responsibilities of Congress parliamentarians are now even greater.

 

He said, "There is a government with nearly a two-thirds majority, which can forcefully push through certain wrong actions using its numbers. We must stand firmly against that and be able to explain it to the people. For that, I extend my best wishes to Sandeepji for an active, exemplary, and visible role."

 

He argued that the Constitutional Council must be made inclusive and balanced as part of the state's fundamental spirit, and that restructuring it unilaterally is wrong. He drew the government's attention to the fact that democratic values and the basic tenets of the state cannot be destabilized.

 

Speaking at the same program organized by the Nepali Congress Palpa-Kathmandu Liaison Committee, Palpa District President Himadatta Shrestha reminded that the Nepali Congress, as the main opposition party, needs to become even stronger and more agile to challenge the nearly two-thirds majority government.
