US Suspends Immigrant Visa Processing for Citizens of 75 Countries Including Nepal

The United States has indefinitely suspended immigrant visa (green card) processing for citizens of 75 countries, including Nepal. The decision was taken citing concerns over the “public charge” rule, which assesses the risk of immigrants becoming a burden on state resources, according to the US Department of State.

As per the announcement made on January 14, 2026, the suspension will come into effect from January 21. The move is expected to impact many countries across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. However, student and tourist visas have not been immediately affected.
