Several areas across the Kathmandu Valley experienced rainfall accompanied by hailstones today (Friday). The sudden change in weather brought dense dark clouds, leading to the hailstorm.
The rain and hail briefly disrupted vehicular movement, while pedestrians also faced difficulties.
According to meteorologists, the change in weather is due to the influence of a western wind system. There is also a possibility of thunderstorms with rainfall over the next few days.
As per the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, light rain with thunder and lightning is currently occurring in some districts of Sudurpaschim, Karnali, and Lumbini provinces. The system is gradually moving northeast, and authorities have urged the public to remain cautious.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported strong winds in various areas, including the Kathmandu Valley.
There is a risk of trees along roadsides being uprooted, electric and telephone poles falling, wires snapping, and tin roofs being blown away as winds may intensify further.
The authority has advised people to avoid risky travel, stay in safe places until the winds subside, and exercise extra caution, especially during school bus operations.
