U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered a 25 percent additional tariff on the import of certain advanced computing chips, effective from Thursday. According to a proclamation published on the White House website, the order will remain in effect until explicitly amended, modified, or revoked.
Trump cited national security concerns as the reason for imposing the tariff on semiconductor imports. The proclamation states that some advanced computing chips and derivative products do not contribute to building the U.S. technology supply chain or strengthening domestic production capacity for semiconductor derivatives.
However, the proclamation provides certain exemptions. Products imported for use in U.S. data centers, domestic repair or replacement, research and development, startups, non–data center consumer applications, civilian industrial applications, and public sector uses will not be subject to the tariff. Exemptions also apply to other products determined to contribute to the U.S. technology supply chain or strengthen domestic semiconductor production capacity.
Trump has instructed U.S. Customs and Border Protection to take necessary or appropriate steps to administer the tariffs as permitted by existing law. The proclamation also clarifies that no refund will be available for tariffs imposed under this order.
