In a major shift in foreign policy, US President Donald Trump has ordered the country to pull out of dozens of international bodies, arguing that they no longer serve American interests.
A presidential memorandum signed on Wednesday directs the United States to withdraw from 35 non-UN organisations and 31 United Nations entities, the White House said. The list includes high-profile bodies such as the International Solar Alliance, IPCC, IUCN, International Renewable Energy Agency and the International Energy Forum. Several UN bodies, including UN Energy, UN Water, the UN Population Fund and the Peacebuilding Commission, are also affected.
The order instructs US agencies to immediately begin the withdrawal process, including ending participation and funding where legally possible. The move follows earlier US exits from the World Health Organization and UNESCO under the Trump administration.
