Three members of a team have scaled the Annapurna-I (8091 meters), marking the first ascent of the peak this mountaineering season, even as preparations for the ascent of the highest peak, the Sagarmatha (8848 meters), continue, Liladhar Awasthi, information officer at the Department of Tourism, said on Sunday.
The three, including a foreigner and two Sherpa guides, were part of an expedition that had Imagine Nepal Trek and Expeditions as the organizer. The nationality of the foreigner and the exact time of the ascent of the world's 10th highest peak were not immediately clear.
For this climbing season, 29 different teams have already gotten permission for climbing different peaks. Seven of them have obtained the permission to climb the Everest (Sagarmatha), five for the Annapurna-I and one for Annapurna-IV.
In the Everest region, rope-fixing work is over in 12 spots and ladder-fixing in four of the hanging air spots.
Team members involved in preparatory works ahead of the Sagarmatha expeditions have returned to the base camp with high winds (85 km/hr) blowing, making the works impossible.
