The Kathmandu district court has granted police the permission to keep Rabindra Mishra, senior vice-chair of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), and Dhawal Shumsher Rana, the party's general secretary, in custody for 15 more days for a further probe into their alleged involvement in the March 28 riots.
Police had arrested the two leaders on March 28 in the wake of riots in Tinkune and Koteshwor during a protest of pro-monarchist forces that led to the loss of life of two youths—a journalist and a transport worker. They face charges of committing offenses against the state.
Other people arrested in connection with the protest have been sent to jail for 20 days on charges of organized crime and public violence, according to SP Apil Raj Bohora, a spokesperson for the Kathmandu Police.
Among those whose detention has been extended are Royal Task Force (RTF) commander Munindra Rajbhandari, Santosh Rajabadi, and others linked to the movement led by Durga Prasai.
Meanwhile, police also arrested Pushkar Khatiwada, a self-proclaimed religious leader, from his residence in Imadol for allegedly mobilizing stone-throwers during the March 28 protest. Durga Prasai, who had taken refuge in Khatiwada’s house after the protest, has since gone into hiding.
