Today is World Wildlife Day. This day reminds us to protect wildlife and nature. It focuses on stopping the overuse of natural resources and saving different species, forests, and ecosystems.
The United Nations declared March 3 as World Wildlife Day to spread awareness about endangered animals and plants.
On this day in 1973, an important agreement called CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) was signed to protect wildlife from illegal trade.
That same year, from March 3 to 14, a big wildlife and climate conference was held in Bangkok, Thailand. During the event, Thailand proposed celebrating Wildlife Day, and later, the UN approved it.
Today, CITES helps protect wildlife worldwide by working with the United Nations and other organizations. Right now, 183 countries are part of this agreement to save nature.
