Heavy rains lashed Adanchuli rural municipality in Humla district on Thursday (April 17), resulting in the death of a number of goats and causing significant damage to properties—both private as well as public—and crops.

Ward numbers 2 and 3 bore the severest brunt of the heavy rains that lasted about one hour, according to Hansha Mahatara, chief administrative officer of the municipal office, citing a preliminary assessment. He said they were still collecting the details of the damage.

In ward number 3 of Adanchuli, 27 goats belonging to Aite Budha died when his shed collapsed due to the rain, Mahatara said, adding that 29 goats were rescued while 25 remained unaccounted for.

The bazaar area, which lies in ward numbers 2 and 3, reportedly bore the heaviest brunt.

In ward number 3, a fancy shop belonging to Amrit Budha and a hotel belonging to Purna Bahadur Rokaya and Buddhi Mahatara suffered the heaviest losses, he said: More than 10 shops suffered minor damage in the bazaar area.

The agriculture division and the animal health division of the municipality suffered significant damage as rainwater gushed through windows, causing extensive damage to official papers, records and other materials, according to Mahatara. The employment division, financial administration section and the office chief’s chamber also suffered damage.

The rains destroyed a block of the Suryodaya secondary school school while other blocks suffered partial damage.

The downpour has damaged roads in the three wards, bringing vehicular movement to a halt.

It also caused significant damage to wheat crops and fruit crops like apples, pears and almonds.

At Thapali village, 15 houses are at risk of collapse due to flood and landslides, Mahatara said: Villages close to streams are at high risk.

In Srinagar, medicines and medical supplies stored at a health post and its sub-branch have suffered damage.

Two years ago, ward no 4, 5 and 6 had borne a heavy brunt of a downpour, accentuating the risk of landslide and flooding at ward numbers 1, 2 and 3.
