Teachers of community schools, who have been protesting in Kathmandu, are now preparing to meet Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. The meeting is scheduled for 7 PM on April 18, where they will directly talk about their demand—the passage of the School Education Bill through the Parliament by addressing issues mentioned in previous agreements with the government, including the one reached with the then government in September 22, 2023.
"The Prime Minister has given us time at 7 PM. We will inform him about our issues and demands," said Tulabahadur Thapa, general secretary of the Nepal Teachers' Federation that's been organizing protests for more than two weeks as part of its efforts to make the government address their demand.
Before meeting PM Oli, the NTF has gathered for internal discussions. "We are holding a meeting to review the ongoing protest and to decide what points to present during the meeting with the Prime Minister," Thapa added.
The meeting is taking place amid increasing worries over possible delays in academic activities like the marking of Secondary Education Examination (SEE) answer sheets, the publication of SEE results and conduct of grade XII exams.
For now, all eyes are on the meeting with Prime Minister Oli, which could be a turning point in an ongoing standoff between the teachers and the government.
