Supreme Court Restores NEA Chief Shakya After Controversial Transfer

Nepal Electricity Authority Managing Director Hitendra Dev Shakya has been reinstated following a Supreme Court ruling that overturned his transfer by former Energy Minister Kulman Ghising. The court labelled the move as biased and retaliatory, ordering Shakya’s immediate return to the post.

Shakya, returning to the authority, said he plans to push NEA projects forward with renewed focus and close cooperation with the Energy Ministry. The controversy traces back to political reshuffles in the sector, with Ghising previously transferring Shakya to the Water and Energy Commission, a move Shakya challenged legally. 

The incident also saw damage to Shakya’s home during the Gen-Z protests, highlighting the political tensions surrounding the authority.
