The government is preparing to amend the law to remove the Prime Minister from the role of university Chancellor in an effort to curb political interference in higher education.

Prime Minister Sushila Karki shared this plan while addressing the 31st convocation ceremony of Kathmandu University in Dhulikhel on Wednesday. She said the reform aims to ensure academic independence and end the long-standing politicization of universities.

Prime Minister Karki, who currently also serves as the Chancellor of Kathmandu University, said the amendment process is being led by Education, Science and Technology Minister Mahabir Pun, with active consultations involving education experts, university leaders, and other stakeholders.

She added that the government intends to introduce a system where a qualified academic figure, rather than a political leader, will serve as Chancellor. The Prime Minister also praised Kathmandu University’s role in higher education reform and encouraged other institutions to follow its example.
