Saraswati Puja, also called Basanta Panchami, is an important Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom, knowledge, arts, and prosperity.

This day holds special significance for students, especially for young children who are just beginning their educational journey. In Hindu belief, it is considered an auspicious day for children to start their learning, and many schools open their admissions on this day. It is believed that by starting their education on Saraswati Puja, children will receive Goddess Saraswati’s blessings, leading to an increase in knowledge and eventual success. It is also believed that by performing the puja, people receive blessings of knowledge and power from the goddess.

The tradition of celebrating Saraswati Puja dates back to ancient times, and it has always been seen as a ritual to honor the goddess. Schools and colleges play a key role in celebrating this day, as it symbolizes education and learning. The festival is also closely tied to Basant Panchami, one of the most prominent Hindu festivals, which focuses on the theme of knowledge and wisdom for all.

According to Hindu mythology, Basant Panchami is associated with various stories. One of the stories is about Lord Krishna, who granted Goddess Saraswati a boon that she would be worshipped alongside other deities on this day. Another version connects the day with Kamadeva, the god of love. It is believed that on Basant Panchami, Kamadeva tried to ignite love in Lord Shiva's heart, but Shiva, angered, turned Kamadeva into ashes. Rati, Kamadeva's wife, pleaded for his revival, and her devotion led to Kamadeva’s return, making the day symbolic of the power of love.

Basant Panchami is considered the birthday of Goddess Saraswati. Lord Brahma is said to have created her on this day, making it significant for Saraswati Puja.

During Saraswati Puja, people from various fields, particularly in art and education, honor their tools and instruments. Students, for example, worship their textbooks, notebooks, and other educational materials, seeking blessings for knowledge and success. Similarly, professionals like photographers and camera persons perform puja on their cameras, while musicians, such as guitarists, offer prayers to their guitars. This tradition reflects a deep respect for the tools of one's trade and a desire for divine guidance in their work.

In Nepal, schools and colleges organize puja programs, while in many parts of India, people fly kites and wear white clothes to welcome the arrival of spring. This day is celebrated with joy, as it not only honors Goddess Saraswati but also symbolizes the start of new beginnings, especially in the field of education.
