A growing health concern has emerged in Baglung district, where faecal coliform bacteria have once again been detected in a large number of drinking water sources.

Out of 341 water sources tested by the Baglung Provincial Public Health Office, 125 were found contaminated. Jaymini Municipality recorded the highest number, with 42 out of 106 sources testing positive for coliform. Galkot Municipality followed with 40 out of 91 contaminated sources.

In Kathekhola Rural Municipality, 27 of 47 water sources were found affected. Baglung Municipality had 4 out of 24, and Badigaad Rural Municipality had 10 out of 68. Encouragingly, Dhorpatan Municipality reported no contamination in its five tested sources.

Experts said testing hasn't yet been conducted in Nisikhola, Tamankhola, Tarakhola, and Bareng areas. He added that the contamination has risen from 103 sources last year to 125 this year, and more testing is planned.

Medical experts like Dr. Kiran Tiwari from Dhaulagiri Provincial Hospital have warned of diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, jaundice, and hepatitis B from drinking such water. He strongly urged residents to boil water before consumption.

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Harihar Sharma of Jaymini Municipality said the local government is actively working to clean and conserve water sources to tackle the issue.
