Momentum is building within the Nepali Congress (NC) as senior leaders prepare to submit signatures demanding a Special General Convention ahead of the party’s Central Committee meeting scheduled for October 12 by President Sher Bahadur Deuba.

The signature campaign led by Dr. Shekhar Koirala and backed by General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma was launched on September 22. According to the party statute, a Special General Convention can be called if 40 percent of convention representatives sign a written request or through a Central Committee decision.

Leaders from the rival faction assert that the campaign has already crossed the 40 percent threshold, claiming even some members from Deuba’s camp have joined. They estimate the number of signatories could reach up to 65 percent. Out of 4,743 representatives, 1,898 signatures are required to demand the convention, which must be held within three months once requested.

The movement for internal restructuring follows the Gen Z protests of September 8 and 9, which amplified calls for change in party leadership. Dr. Koirala and Thapa are meeting today to discuss the upcoming Central Committee session and finalize preparations for submitting the signatures.
