Despite the government’s strong presence in public enterprises, many are still struggling to show growth.

Currently, 45 public enterprises are operating across Nepal. Among them, 20 are fully owned by the government, while the remaining 25 are majority government owned.

According to the data from fiscal year 2080/81 (2023/24), these enterprises recorded a total operating income of NPR 660.15 billion. However, this figure is 0.22% lower compared to the income in the previous year, 2079/80.

The operating income contributed 11.57% to the country’s total GDP.

Out of the 45 institutions, 28 were able to earn profit, 16 faced losses, and 2 remained shut down. The total net profit of public enterprises stood at NPR 42.62 billion, down by 12.88% compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, the total net loss from the loss-making enterprises reached NPR 3.63 billion. Compared to last year, net profit dropped by 11.50%, while the losses increased by 8.65%.

These figures highlight the need for more efficient management and reforms in Nepal's public enterprise sector to ensure better financial outcomes.
