Mass protests have erupted across Kathmandu following the government’s decision to remove Kulman Ghising from his position as managing director of the Nepal Electricity Authority.

Demonstrators, including political groups and independent activists, have taken to the streets, demanding his reinstatement.

The Rastriya Swatantra Party has joined the protests, showing support for the movement led by civil society. Party members, including MP Sumana Shrestha, participated in a demonstration at Naya Baneshwor. MP Ganesh Parajuli confirmed that he and other party leaders would also be part of the protest.

The government removed Ghising late Monday evening, about six months before his term was set to end. The cabinet appointed Hitendradev Shakya, the former executive director of NEA, as his successor. Reports suggest the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation had been under pressure to remove Ghising for some time. The tension became more apparent when the ministry rated his performance poorly.

The timing of the decision has raised further concerns, as it comes just days after Energy Minister Deepak Khadka stated in the National Assembly that load-shedding could return in the evenings. Protesters say they will continue their demonstrations till Ghising's reinstatement.
