Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, coordinator of the Nepali Communist Party, visited the historic Chunbang site at Bheri Danda this morning. He reached there while campaigning for the upcoming House of Representatives election in Rukum East.

Chunbang is an important place in Nepal’s political history. In 2005, the then CPN (Maoist) held a central committee meeting there. In that meeting, the party decided to move towards a democratic republic and also planned cooperation with parliamentary political parties. The party also reduced its central committee members from 95 to 35. This meeting is considered a major turning point in Nepal’s political journey.

During today’s visit, Prachanda observed the meeting place, the room where he and his wife Sita Dahal stayed, and the houses and rooms where his son Prakash Dahal and other leaders stayed. When asked about his family’s contribution, Prachanda became emotional and briefly spoke about their role in Nepal’s revolutionary movement.

While speaking to local voters, Prachanda said the Chunbang meeting played an important role in turning the people’s war towards peace and the republican system. He said Rukum was one of the key districts that helped start the revolution and later supported the peace process.

Prachanda is scheduled to meet voters today in Gairigaun and Chunbang. Later, he will also visit Taksera in Putha North Rural Municipality.

Prachanda has been campaigning in Rukum East for the past three days. Rukum East is the only hilly district in Lumbini Province.
