Prime Minister Sushila Karki has pledged to transfer power to an elected parliament within the next six months.
Addressing senior government officials at Singha Durbar after assuming office on Sunday, Karki made it clear that she would not remain in office beyond this period. She said her government’s key responsibility is to conduct parliamentary elections and hand over leadership to newly elected representatives.
The Prime Minister stressed that the success of the election would require full cooperation from security agencies and all stakeholders, urging active support to ensure a peaceful and credible process.
Expressing concern over the recent Gen-Z protests, Karki condemned the arson attacks on sensitive institutions such as Singha Durbar, the Supreme Court, and police posts, calling the incidents a “national shame.”
She further explained that her appointment was not out of personal ambition but rather a necessity, as she could not ignore the voice of the people expressed on the streets.
It may be recalled that on September 9, during the Gen-Z demonstrations, protestors torched government offices, party headquarters, private businesses, and even residential houses.
