Kathmandu – Nepal Police has rearrested 3,723 prisoners who escaped during the violent Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9.

At a press briefing, Police Spokesperson DIG Binod Ghimire said that despite the large number of arrests, around 10,320 prisoners are still on the run. He urged the public to stay alert and provide any information about escapees to nearby security offices.

According to Ghimire, some prisoners were caught while attempting to cross the border into India and were handed back by Indian police. Others were captured by the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force. A few escapees even surrendered voluntarily.

Along with prisoners, 139 detainees who had fled from police custody in different districts have also been recaptured. However, nearly 2,100 detainees remain missing.

The jailbreaks occurred on September 9, when violent protests, arson, and vandalism swept across the country as part of the Gen-Z movement, which has shaken Nepal’s political landscape.
