Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki has appointed senior advocate Sabita Bhandari as the country’s attorney general, making her the first woman in history to hold the post.

Bhandari, daughter of 99-year-old senior advocate Krishna Prasad Bhandari, takes over the role after Ramesh Badal stepped down following former PM KP Sharma Oli’s resignation. President Ram Chandra Paudel formally accepted Badal’s resignation on Sunday.

Alongside the appointment, Prime Minister Karki has also begun discussions to form her Cabinet. She is expected to induct five ministers soon, as part of her efforts to speed up the interim government’s work.

Karki, who assumed office under pressure from the Gen-Z movement, is Nepal’s first female prime minister. Shortly after she took oath on Friday night, President Paudel dissolved the House of Representatives and set the date for general elections on March 5, 2025.
