The 20th Phewa New Year Festival has officially begun in Pokhara, bringing a lively mix of culture, music, food, and tourism activities. The festival, organized by the Hotel Association Pokhara, was inaugurated by Mayor Dhanraj Acharya on Saturday in Ambot. It will run until April 14, marking the arrival of the Nepali New Year 2082.

This year’s festival promises something for everyone. From Khaharechowk to Damside, the three-kilometer stretch of Lakeside is hosting colorful events featuring traditional Nepali music, cultural dances, local cuisine, and sports competitions. Entry to the event is free.

A special attraction this time is the inclusion of Bisket Jatra, a famous cultural festival from Bhaktapur. The event also highlights the rich traditions of the 11 districts of Gandaki Province, with performances of local songs like bhajans and ratyauli, and displays of indigenous food.

Tourists visiting Pokhara during the festival can enjoy a 20% discount at participating hotels. Organizers say that hotel bookings have already reached 80% and are expected to rise to 90% as more visitors arrive.

Festival coordinator Laxman Subedi expressed hope that the event would help revive the local economy and attract more domestic tourists. Binayak Shah, president of Hotel Association Nepal, added that tourism is key to Nepal’s economic growth.

The festival also includes a new feature this year—an institutional badminton cup, sponsored by Barahi Hospitality Group. Other events include live concerts, handicraft and agriculture product exhibitions, folk dohori music shows, and tourist running competitions.

With vibrant performances, exciting events and cultural richness, the Phewa festival offers an unforgettable experience to both locals and visitors.
