Nepali Congress leader Udaya Shamsher Rana has said that the party has not split and that only a leadership change is underway. Speaking to News Agency Nepal on Wednesday at the special general convention venue in Bhrikutimandap, Rana said the convention was organized with the aim of policy and leadership reform.

He stated that although convention delegates showed flexibility on leadership issues, the establishment faction rejected the proposed changes. Rana added that the special convention was necessary to take the demands and issues of all sections of society to the people in the upcoming elections.

“The Nepali Congress held a special convention where two things are addressed, passing policy and selecting leadership. We passed the policy. As for leadership, we proposed not an immediate change but an understanding that would also encourage new leadership. General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma himself read out some points seeking partial accommodation,” Rana said. “Not everything was rejected, so we cannot entirely blame the establishment. However, what was necessary was not done, and the convention moved into an electoral process. The Congress has not split; it is a leadership change. Once the Election Commission legalizes the special convention, there is no question of a party split.”

Rana further asserted that once the leadership elected by the special convention receives legal recognition from the Election Commission, all existing problems within the party will be resolved.
