Amid rising debate, the Nepali Congress has begun internal discussions over the Land-Related (Amendment) Bill, 2025, currently under consideration in the House of Representatives.
A key meeting was held on Monday at the party’s parliamentary office in Singha Durbar between General Secretary Gagan Thapa, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, and Chief Whip Shyam Kumar Ghimire. During the talks, Minister Lekhak reportedly informed that the CPN-UML-led government is seeking to pass the bill directly through a full House vote. However, Thapa objected to this plan, sources said.
Thapa, along with fellow General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma, has already filed a proposal demanding that the bill be sent to a parliamentary committee for detailed discussion before it is passed. Sharma had earlier criticized the government on July 9 for trying to rush the legislation without adequate preparation.
Although the bill was initially included in the House agenda that day, it was removed after the Congress party made its opposition clear. Still, Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire had re-listed it for possible discussion but was again forced to withdraw it due to lack of support.
The Nepali Congress remains firm that such a significant bill requires thorough review before moving forward.
