A Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed in Dhaka on Monday, July 21, 2025, killing at least 27 people and injuring more than 160 others. The accident took place in the Uttara neighborhood when the F-7 BGI jet, which had just taken off from Kurmitola Airbase for a routine training flight, suddenly experienced mechanical problems.
The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Md Towkir Islam, tried his best to control the plane and steer it away from crowded areas to avoid more casualties. Unfortunately, the jet crashed into the Milestone School and College campus during school hours. The impact caused a fire that engulfed part of the school building.
Many of the injured are students, some of whom are in critical condition. Emergency responders, including military personnel and firefighters, rushed to the scene to help. Because there were not enough ambulances available, the injured were transported to nearby hospitals using different vehicles. The fire was successfully controlled by early afternoon.
The Bangladesh government declared a national day of mourning following the tragedy. Flags were lowered to half-mast across the country, and special prayers were held in various places of worship to honor the victims. An official investigation committee has been set up to find out the exact cause of the crash and to prevent such accidents in the future.
This tragic incident is considered the deadliest air crash in Dhaka in recent years. It has shocked the nation and raised concerns about aircraft safety and emergency preparedness.
