Nepal will continue exporting electricity to India as the Indian Central Electricity Authority has renewed approval for the export of 283 megawatts of power from eight hydropower projects.

The renewal, granted on Wednesday, allows the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to keep selling surplus electricity in India’s Energy Exchange (IEX) under both Day-Ahead and Real-Time markets, as well as through bilateral agreements with Indian states such as Haryana and Bihar.

Out of the total, approval for four hydropower projects supplying about 103 MW of electricity to IEX had recently expired. The renewed approval, effective from Tuesday, extends the export rights for another year.

Likewise, Nepal has been exporting 180 MW of power to Haryana under a bilateral deal that was due to expire on Thursday. The NEA had requested permission to sell the same power in the IEX market once that deal ended, a proposal now approved by the Indian authority.

Nepal also exports electricity to Bangladesh using India’s transmission network, as part of regional energy cooperation.

During his visit to New Delhi to attend the 8th Assembly of the International Solar Alliance, Nepal’s Energy Minister Kulman Ghising had urged Indian Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to simplify and speed up the export approval process, highlighting that Nepal is currently in its peak production season.

The latest approval ensures uninterrupted electricity exports and strengthens cross-border energy collaboration between Nepal and India.
